COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
1. First Steps Orientation (Pistol) is a four hour course including both classroom and range sessions and is designed to help students develop the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to safely own, handle and use your own pistol. The fee for the class is $89, with a $30 discount for those who bring their own pistol and 50rds of ammunition.
2. Basic Pistol is an 8 hour class that covers the following topics: Safety (principles, best practices and their origin), Pistol parts and nomenclature (common terms used), Pistol Operation (how they work), Ammunition (how it is made, calibers, selecting proper ammunition, potential malfunctions), Shooting fundamentals (the elements of making a quick accurate shot), Range procedures (including common problems and fixes for them), Sight adjustment, Scoring Targets, Selecting a pistol and purchase guidelines, Cleaning and maintaining a pistol, Storage of firearms and ammunition, Transportation of firearms and ammunition, Follow on activities to maintain pistol proficiency, e.g. competition, qualification programs, etc. Two basic exercises will be fired with live ammunition, and additional challenge firing will be included in the course if participants are interested. The fee for this class is $99 with a $30 discount for those who bring their own pistol and 100rds of ammunition.
3. Basic Rifle is a fourteen hour course designed to teach the safe and effective operation and maintenance of rifles and techniques for their effective employment for hunting, competitio
n and general purposes. The fee for this class is $149 with a $30 discount for those with their own rifle and 30rds of ammunition.
4. First Steps Orientation (AR Rifle) this is also a four to six hour introductory course designed to introduce safe and effective use of the AR rifle platform. The class teaches you how to zero your rifle, adjust sights, and is an introduction to effectively engaging targets at the distances for which your rifle is designed. Cleaning and maintenance of the rifle as well as common modifications will be introduced. The fee for this class is $60 and you must have your own rifle and 30 rds of ammunition. (This class may be offered for AK type rifles if there is interest. Drop me a note if such a class would appeal to you.)
5. Muzzle-Loading Rifle is a twelven hour course designed to teach the safe and effective operation and maintenance of muzzle-loading and black powder rifles and techniques for their effective employment for hunting, competition and general purposes. The fee for this class is $149. Students may bring their own muzzle loading rifle to insure familiarity with it, but will be working with ShootSharp rifles during the class.
6. Basic Shotgun is a ten hour course that teaches the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to safely and effectively use the shotgun on flying targets and
for shotgun games. Any type or guage of shotgun can be used for the course. The fee for this class is $119 with a $30 discount if you bring your own shotgun and ammunition.
7. First Steps Orientation (Defensive Shotgun) is designed to introduce safe and effective use of the shotgun as a defensive tool. Cleaning and maintenance of the shotgun Any type or guage of shotgun can be used for the course. The fee for this class is $90, with a $30 discount if you bring your own shotgun and ammunition.
The NRA Personal Protection in the Home (PPITH) and NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home (PPOTH) are the capstones of NRA instruction and prepare persons for use of a pistol for self defense. Each of these courses is 16 hours in length and provides detailed instruction in these disciplines. I recommend that those desiring advanced pistol training take one or both of these courses and participate on teams offering these courses is several locations around the country. The NRA website includes a listing of all courses available at any given time. NB: Basic Pistol is a prerequisite for PPITH and PPITH is a prerequisite for PPOTH.
